Badger Connect Podcast: Matt Lepay, the voice of the Badgers, on his memorable career

When Matt Lepay came to Madison to call Wisconsin basketball games on the radio in 1988, there wasn’t much thought to the Badgers participating in the NCAA Tournament. The football program, meanwhile, was in the midst of a frustrating era under Don Morton that would end a year later with his firing.

In the 38 years since Lepay’s arrival, he has witnessed and called some of the most memorable moments in the history of both programs while not only establishing himself as the voice of the Badgers but one of the top broadcasters in the country.

Lepay has called six Rose Bowls, five Big Ten championships and three Final Four appearances in addition to eight seasons spent calling Milwaukee Brewers games on television. He has been named the Wisconsin Sportscaster of the Year 11 times and in 2025 was inducted into the UW Athletic Hall of Fame for special service.

In the latest Badger Connect Podcast, Lepay sits down with Mike Heller to discuss his career, the craft of broadcasting, memorable calls, developing relationships with coaches and more. Check out the full episode here:
