Badger Connect Podcast: Brad Davison on his role as a coach and what Wisconsin basketball means to him

Brad Davison acknowledges he had some hesitancy about the career-defining opportunity Wisconsin basketball coach Greg Gard presented to him last fall.

Davison, his wife, Tyra and their baby daughter, Maya, were leasing an apartment in Spain as both Brad and Tyra were set to begin their respective seasons as professional basketball players. A day before Davison’s season opener for HLA Alicante, Gard asked him if he had interest in replacing Kirk Penney as the special assistant to the head coach in Madison.

Davison knew this was the job opportunity he had been waiting for since he turned pro. But he didn’t know if he could make the transition so quickly given his contract and family situation in Spain. As Davison recalled, however, Tyra spoke with conviction about what the next step should be, telling him: When God opens the doors to your dreams, it’s not a question of if you’re going to do it but how are you going to make it work?

Davison played his season opener on a Saturday and then informed his coaches, teammates, general manager and president about his retirement afterward. The Davisons packed up their apartment on Monday, paid to break their lease and flew to Madison on Tuesday so Brad could be at Wisconsin’s practice on Wednesday.

In the latest Badger Connect Podcast with Mike Heller, Davison discusses his path to Wisconsin as a player under Gard, returning to work under Gard last season in a coaching capacity and more. Check out the full episode here:
