Badger Bites: Greg and Isaac Gard on bonding over basketball and what their Wisconsin journey means

This post originally appeared in February. We’re reposting it today for Father’s Day. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.

Isaac Gard wore a red Wisconsin Badgers basketball jersey as a 3-year-old on Christmas Eve in 2006, when his dad, Greg, began quizzing him on the team roster. To ask Isaac a number was to immediately receive the name attached to it.

So ingrained was Wisconsin basketball in Isaac that he’d pretend to be public address announcer Mike Mahnke as he boomed the Badgers’ starting lineup introductions. Greg, then an assistant coach with the program, joked that his son knew the roster before he could recite the alphabet.

So when Isaac had an opportunity nearly 16 years later to join Wisconsin’s program as a walk-on under his dad, who had since become the head coach, he quickly realized it was something he couldn’t pass up.

“I think when he initially asked me, it wasn’t a resounding yes I don’t think right at the start because I knew it was going to be a big change and a lot of work,” said Isaac, now a senior for the Badgers. “But eventually I thought about it a little more and I knew four years from then, if I looked back on it and I said no, I was probably going to regret it. I’m very glad that I said yes. It’s just been amazing.”

Greg and Isaac sat down with Badger Connect ahead of Wisconsin’s senior night game against Maryland to discuss their relationship, Isaac’s path to becoming a Badger, his development as a walk-on and more in the latest episode of Badger Bites. Check out the full video here:
